Solley’s Farms, Red Tractor Kentish ice cream producer

Solley’s Kentish Ice Cream is a fourth-generation dairy business, based at the family farm at Ripple, near Deal in Kent. The Solley family originally ran a couple of farm shops and operated local milk rounds with produce from their own Guernsey herd.
In the 1980s, with milk prices falling steeply, Stephen Solley took the bold move of diversifying the business. Ice cream production began in 1985 and the company gained a Royal Warrant from the Queen Mother in 1990. The herd was sold in 1999 and since then Solley’s has used farm-assured milk from a herd at a neighbouring farm a mile down the road.
Solley’s continues to be a family affair, with Stephen handing over the reins to his daughter Katie and son-in-law Keith Morrison. Keith and Stephen manage the farm, which is 383 acres of arable land with residential properties, while Keith is general manager of the ice cream business and Katie runs the onsite farm shop, ‘The Calf Shed’.
Keith says: “We are proud that our ice cream displays the coveted Red Tractor logo – a mark of quality which consumers trust. We were one of the first farms in the UK to have renewed our Red Tractor status under the new, more stringent guidelines, ensuring all our ice cream is produced to the most rigorous, up-to-date standards.
“We place a strong emphasis on quality, family, tradition and local sourcing backed up by impeccable customer service. With sustainability becoming an ever-important consideration, we favour the use of Kentish ingredients and keep food miles as low as possible by working with local suppliers. If we can’t find what we need in Kent we will try to get it from elsewhere in the UK, for instance, sugar from Cambridgeshire.
“Red Tractor assurance, both for our farm and our milk supplier’s farm, means that customers can be sure that our products represent the best of British in terms of ingredients, sourcing, hygiene and quality. The Red Tractor logo is a vote of confidence which ensures high standards across the board.”
